In 2023, Shelby Construction was called upon to help a growing family expand and enhance their living space—turning a beloved home into a lasting legacy. The goal was to thoughtfully add square footage without losing the charm and integrity of the original architecture. What resulted was a transformative 1,000-square-foot addition centered around a stunning, light-filled entertaining space.

Goal
As the family grew, so did their desire for a space where they could gather, entertain, and enjoy time together in a setting that felt open, connected, and inspired. Their dream centered on the creation of a large dining and entertaining room that would extend off the main house and become a central hub for hosting.
Drawing inspiration from English garden and observation rooms, the design vision was clear—this new space needed to bring in natural light, offer expansive views of the backyard, and feel like a seamless extension of the home rather than a standalone structure. It needed to be elegant, inviting, and highly functional for everyday life and special occasions alike.
Shelby Construction was brought in to bring that vision to life while ensuring it all came together with architectural cohesion and engineering integrity.
Challenges
While the interior concept was well-defined, the exterior posed one of the greatest design and construction challenges of the project: integrating the addition into an existing mansard-style roof. This type of roof, with its steep lower slope and flat upper section, doesn’t easily accommodate add-ons—especially ones as large and visible as a 1,000-square-foot expansion.
Our team worked through extensive planning and collaboration with structural engineers and designers to create a custom roofline that respected the architectural character of the original home while accommodating the scale and purpose of the new space. Every beam, angle, and load-bearing point was calculated and inspected to ensure both compliance and continuity.
It was essential that the new structure flow naturally from the existing home—not just in shape, but also in style. Window placement, ceiling height, and sightlines were all optimized to enhance the space from the inside out.
Results
The result of this project is a seamless, elegant addition that has transformed the way the family lives and connects in their home. The new entertaining and dining room, filled with natural light and designed with classic garden room elements, now stands as a centerpiece of the home. Large windows invite the outdoors in, while the open layout allows for effortless hosting and daily enjoyment.
